MIT Sloan MFin Program – How can one get admitted?

MIT is a dream school for millions of students around the globe. To get admission to the MFin program at MIT Sloan, one must have an analytical mindset and be curious and passionate about mathematical computations.

MIT Sloan Management school encourages students to add value to their vibrant learning environment with diverse ideas and life experiences. The MFin at MIT offers STEM modules during its 18 months rigorous program. Students have an opportunity to accelerate the program’s pace by opting for a 12-month.

MFin program focuses on the fundamentals of how the market functions by utilising quantitative models, advanced financial theories, and industry practices.

Admission requirements for the MFin program at MIT Sloan

International students must submit the following documents to get an admit to the MFin program at MIT Sloan:

⦁  Resume: The candidate must submit their updated resume not exceeding one page. Your CV must specify your academic record, work experience, accomplishments during jobs, internships, and extracurriculars, professional and language skills. You must ensure that your resume is formatted, keeping in mind the following points:

  • Font Style: Times New Roman
  • Font Size: 10
  • Resume Format: Word or PDF file format only.

⦁  Relevant Coursework and Professional Certifications: Students must list out the professional courses they are currently pursuing in the following specialisations:

  • Algebra
  • Multivariable Calculus
  • Probability Statistics

Moreover, students can list out some other courses or professional certifications that might help speed up their admission process.

⦁  Exam Results: Students must submit their GMAT and GRE scores. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the university accepts remote/at-home versions of these exams. The minimum GMAT score required to get admission to the MFin program at MIT is 700-770. In addition, the students must obtain an average score of 320 on the GRE exam to qualify for the MFin program.

⦁  English Proficiency Exams: Students must submit proof of proficiency in the English language. This is a general practice to assess students’ proficiency level in the English language. Students must get a 7.0 score on a scale of 9 in the IELTS exam. If you opt for the IELTS waiver, you can submit your TOEFL results. You must score at least 100 on the TOEFL exam.

⦁  Application Fees: Students must submit the application fee of $150, which is non-refundable. Students must deposit this fee online before submitting their applications. Candidates falling under these categories can opt for application fee waivers:

  •  Veteran and on active duty of the U.S. military personnel or
  •  Current Teach for American members and alumni or
  •  Current Peace Corps members

⦁  Statement of Purpose or Motivation: You must submit a statement of purpose justifying your source of motivation and reason for pursuing MFin at MIT Sloan.

⦁  Letters of Recommendation: MFin candidates must have at least three letters of recommendation duly signed by their professor, mentor, guide(in case of academic letters of recommendation), manager(in case of professional letters of recommendation), etc. Also, do not forget to include your quantitative skills with relevant instances supporting your skills.

For example, if you are currently pursuing your bachelor’s, you can submit two letters of recommendation from your professor or mentor. If you are a working professional, you must submit one letter of recommendation from your current employer/manager. Your previous university professor or mentor must duly sign the other letter. The university does not accept letters of recommendation from a friend or relative.

⦁  Academic Transcripts: Students must submit soft copies of their undergraduate degree(4-year or 3-year duration for students outside the USA). Students must have a minimum GPA score of 3.49 out of 4.

⦁  Essays: Students must also submit essay answers to the questions asked by the university within the prescribed word limit of 200 words or less for each short answer. These questions are mostly related to your previous academic and professional achievements that will assist you to excel in the MFin program. In addition to this, you must specify your short-term and long-term career goals and how will you achieve them.

⦁  Video Questions: Apart from essay questions, students must submit one video answer introducing themselves to their future classmates. Another video answer addressing an open-ended question. The applicant will answer this question promptly, and it will assess your communication style.
