A Brief History
Maharana Udai Singh moved his capital from Chittorgarh to a lush valley area in 1553, giving the area the name Udaipur. When Maharana Udai Singh was living in exile in Kumbhalgarh, he had began to realize the benefit of the hilly regions.
He made the decision to relocate his capital, and he picked the eastern shore of Lake Pichola as his new location. He had encountered a hermit named Goswami Premgiriji here while out hunting in the mountains. The hermit gave him permission to erect the palace that is today known as Pichola near the lake’s edge. Therefore, he made the decision to move the capital from Chittaurgarh to Girwa Valley.
When was the Founding Day?
On the auspicious Aakhaa-Teej day in 1553 (15th April, 1553), Maharana Udai Singh inaugurated the city. When the Mughal Empire threatened Mewar and took control of Chittorgarh fort in 1567, Udai Singh erected a massive, six-kilometer-long wall to defend Udaipur. Seven gates adorned the wall.
When the city was invaded by the Mughal Emperors Akbar and later Aurangzeb, the Maharana had an edge due to the city’s elevation.
Along with building the capital city, Maharana Udai Singh also built a huge masonry dam that he named Udaisagar in his honour.
What happened after changing the Capital?
The Maharana generously gave territory for a new city and invited people of all castes and communities to come there. While the wider public built regular homes, the nobility and traders also relocated here and built their own havelis. Along the banks of the Pichola, step wells were built in addition to the bathing ghats.
Maharana Jagat Singh-I expanded the palace that Maharana Udai Singh had established by adding more rooms, and he also improved the city’s temples and the Jagmandir island palace. Amar Kund, Rang Sagar, Kumbhariya Talab, and Swaroop Sagar are the additional four waterbodies that have been added to Pichola to its north throughout the years.
Later, when the Mughal Empire started to fall apart, the Sisodia declared themselves independent and reclaimed Udaipur and the rest of Mewar, with the exception of Chittorgarh. Udaipur and the surrounding lands were held by the Sisodias until it was turned into a princely state and placed under British rule.
